Lufthansa A380 Business (JFK-FRA)

,

Hey readers, today I’m going to be writing about my experience on board Lufthansa’s Airbus A380 in business class. Now, this was all part of my journey to Italy over the summer and this was easily one of the best flights of my life. First, me and my family have a black car take us to JFK’s terminal one. This is a huge terminal, and contains many European and Asian airlines. Once finally locating the Lufthansa check-in, we got our boarding passes and sent of our luggage. There was practically no wait as there are four different desks dedicated to LH’s business class passengers.

We went right towards security, which as usual in terminal one, was quite terrible. There is a premium security line, however it is shared between First, Business, as well as the crew. We were through in almost 20 minutes (I know, not that bad). At this point, we had two hours to kill before the flight, so we went to the Lufthansa Senator Lounge. It was definitely amazing. There was a wide variety of food available, everything from cookies to pasta dishes. The lounge also contained tons of comfortable seating with a view of the tarmac. For an aviation geek like me, this was a selling point :).

At around 3:15, it was time to board so we to our gate. We were among the first to board, and were warmly welcomed aboard. The flight attendants then pointed us toward our seats. On fist impression, the cabin was quite large and roomy. I was overjoyed to finally relax and get excited for my trip. I had quite a bit of room around me. Several small compartments in the seat along with the large storage bins on the side of the window. If you do book these seats, sure you will have to climb over your neighbor but you will have quite a bit of extra storage. In the front drawer, there was a nice amenity kit along with a bottle of water. At this point, I was ready to sprawl out, so I grabbed my pillow and blanket left for me at the seat. The blanket was amazing, like a thinner comforter. The pillow too was quite nice and firm. These small touches led me to have the best airplane sleep of my life.

Just minutes after boarding, our fantastic flight attendant Jonas welcomed us aboard. He then offered menus and took orders for pre-departure drinks. I ordered a Sprite. Once boarding came to a close, we pushed back and were informed of our flying time of almost seven and a half hours. The safety video then played in English and German, both with German subtitles. Taxi was pretty long, but we took of on time at around four o’clock in the afternoon. About half an hour later, orders were taken for dinner. First, Jonas brought over some mixed nuts and offered more drinks. They were actually delicious, the best mixed nuts I’ve ever received on an airline.

To start I had the shrimp appetizer followed by a prosciutto wrapped filet. Both were beyond expectations. It may just be that Lufthansa is a German airline, but damn their pretzel rolls were delicious. They served these throughout the four-course meal. I couldn’t believe that such good food was available on an airplane. Desert was last to be served, I selected both the cheese plate along with the Häagen-Dazs ice cream. The cheese was quite decent and as expected the ice cream was delicious. There was also a snack basket placed in the front of the cabin, I grabbed some chocolates.

Right after this, I was exhausted so I put on an episode of Modern Family and drifted off to sleep. I ended up dozing off for over four hours. I was actually a bit disappointed, I wanted more time to enjoy Lufthansa! I needed to use the bathroom, so I used one of the many dedicated to Business Class. It was very nice and well maintained. A decent size, it also had any amenities that might have been missing from the amenity kit. This included mouthwash, combs, face wipes, as well as razors. The bathroom also had one of my favorite things, a window! Even though it might seem strange, I’m a sucker for windows in an airplane bathroom. It lets so much more light into the typically small room.

As I was waking up, I noticed breakfast was just served, so I called Jonas and requested breakfast. He actually read my mind and asked as he approached “Would you like some breakfast?”. I was thankful to get the full meal as they were still serving food in the cabin. I got the egg dish along with the fresh fruit, yogurt, and bakery items. It was very good and gave me some much needed energy to fight the jet lag.
